The Energy Technologies Institute (ETI) just appointed Cambridge Consultants to drive a Home Energy Managements System (HEMS) project for the next two years in the UK. The goal of this project is to accelerate the deployment of customer oriented HEMS, which will have mass market appeal.

HEMS are systems based on intelligent measurement tools which are installed in homes to measure energy consumption and provide information on possible energy savings and thus help reduce costs for the user. This ambitious new project is designed to create a HEMS for a building that is more than simply an automation of existing controls. The goal is to create a system that encourages users to change their behaviour and, consequently, their energy consumption.

Tim Ensor, head of the connected objects division with Cambridge Consultants, commented on the announcement of the project, stating “Most of us have only a vague idea of what the kilowatt hours we buy from our energy supplier actually mean – and how they translate into our experience of being warm and comfortable at home.”
